Recently, I had the privilege of returning to my alma mater, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, where I engaged in an enlightening dialogue with college students and young girls from the campus school about careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
When we think of our time in college or in our careers for that matter, the noticeable gender disparity in STEM fields always stands out like an eye sore. This imbalance is not just a statistic; it reflects untapped potential and unexplored ideas. The reasons behind this gap are multifaceted, including societal stereotypes, lack of role models, and limited awareness about the opportunities STEM careers can offer.
However, it’s not all bleak. The enthusiasm and curiosity displayed by the young girls I spoke with at IIT Kanpur were heartening. Their keen interest in building their career in STEM fields reinforced my belief that with the right guidance and encouragement, we can pave the way for more women in STEM.
I was inspired by the other speakers who talked about having strong will power to overcome the disparity, not being bogged down by the assumption that the world is biased against you and to standing up tall for your hopes and dreams.
